CNG, SCG Host Annual First Responder Training on Natural Gas and Liquified Natural Gas Hazard Response
Training sessions focus on gas distribution systems, safety protocols, emergency response, and hazard mitigation
ORANGE, Conn. — March 27, 2025 — Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG) and Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), subsidiaries of Avangrid, have launched their annual training sessions for first responders on natural gas and liquified natural gas (LNG) emergency response. These in-person seminars provide essential knowledge and hands-on training to enhance safety and coordination during gas related incidents in residential, commercial, and transportation settings.
“Ensuring the safety of our communities, customers, and employees is our top priority,” said Frank Reynolds, President and CEO of CNG and SCG. “Our comprehensive training program ensures first responders have the tools and knowledge to manage gas emergencies effectively—whether in residential, business, or transportation settings. We look forward to continuing this outreach and strengthening our partnerships to ensure safe and efficient emergency responses.”
The training is divided into two parts. The first segment provides an overview of natural gas emergency response, covering local gas distribution systems, natural gas properties and concentration ranges, and the odorant injection process at gate stations. First responders also learn how to use Combustible Gas Indicators (CGI) to monitor gas levels, evacuation procedures, and gas shut-off protocols. Emphasis is placed on identifying ignition hazards, detecting gas leaks indoors and outdoors, and determining when it is safe to allow a gas fire to burn. The session also teaches when and how to shut off gas supplies during structure fires and how to mitigate ignition risks.
The second portion focuses on LNG and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) transportation emergencies. Participants are trained on identifying LNG and CNG tanker trucks and handling leaks and fires involving pressurized gaseous fuels. The session emphasizes safe identification, assessment, and approaches to LNG or CNG vehicles, as well as risk mitigation strategies for managing transportation-related emergencies.
“Our goal is to ensure first responders are well-prepared for any natural gas emergency,” said Tom Kennedy, Director of LNG Gas Control and SCADA Instrumentation for CNG and SCG. “Ongoing training seminars are crucial for keeping responders up to date on industry standards, safety protocols, and technological advancements. As processes evolve, we must ensure first responders have the resources and knowledge needed to protect themselves and the community.”
“We take pride in offering hands-on training and live demonstrations,” said Joshua Campe, Supervisor of LNG Plants for CNG and SCG. “These sessions allow responders to practice real-world techniques, ensuring they are prepared to manage emergencies confidently. The training also helps build connections, allowing responders to know who to contact for quick and efficient incident response.”
CNG and SCG remain committed to providing first responders with the resources necessary to safely manage gas-related emergencies, safeguarding the communities they serve. For additional information on natural gas safety visit, SCG Safety or CNG Safety.
