CNG Workers Respond and Restore Service Following Gas Leak
Following a third-party contractor’s hit to a service line on New Park Avenue in West Hartford, six CNG employees restored service in under 2.5 hours
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — June 6, 2024 — Today, employees of Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG), a subsidiary of Avangrid (NYSE: AGR), responded to a natural gas leak on New Park Avenue. The leak was caused at approximately 8:30 AM by a third-party contractor who, in the completion of their work, hit a CNG service line with a shovel. Two CNG emergency response personnel responded in within 10 minutes of receiving the call, and distribution crews and a supervisor made the area safe within 50 minutes, repaired the leak, and restored service to one impacted customer, whose service interruption ended at approximately 10:57 AM.
“At CNG, when service interruptions happen, our team is quick to respond and deploy resources to ensure customer impacts are as limited and as brief as possible,” said Frank Reynolds, President & CEO of CNG. “While we are proud that our response fully reflects our commitment to the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas, we also recognize much of our pipe infrastructure in the Hartford area is aged and in need of replacement with upgraded, strengthened material, which would help reduce the number of interruptions related to damaged service lines. We have asked our regulators to approve additional funds for this replacement program in our current CNG rate case, and we look forward to making these essential improvements once that request has been approved.”
While the third-party contractor involved in today’s gas leak is confirmed to have had an active Call Before You Dig report and request on file with CNG, CNG reminds customers, contractors, and municipal officials to Call Before You Dig at (800) 922-4455 or visit CBYD.com before starting any earth-moving projects. State laws require anyone who digs to notify utility companies at least two business days (but not more than 10) before starting any project that requires underground construction. CNG reminds customers and contractors to plan for gas utility conflicts as part of all underground construction, properly maintain all underground utility markings, use and properly install suitable backfill materials around gas facilities, and notify CNG if a gas facility is damaged so they can make repairs if required.
