SCAM ALERT: CNG and SCG are Alerting Customers to be Aware of Scammers Seeking Bill Payments
CNG and SCG urges customers not to respond to unsolicited requests from unknown callers seeking payment
ORANGE, Conn. — April 2, 2025 — Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG) and Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), subsidiaries of Avangrid, today warned customers not to respond or make payments to unsolicited callers seeking payment. CNG and SCG have become aware of unauthorized third parties obtaining customer data that may be used by scammers to solicit such payments. CNG and SCG will be contacting customers whose data may have been obtained by such unauthorized third parties.
“We are making every effort to notify every SCG and CNG customer who had data affected by this incident and are working with security officials and local law enforcement to safeguard our system and find those individuals responsible,” said Frank Reynolds, President and CEO of CNG and SCG.
CNG and SCG were made aware of the possibility for the scam following reports late Monday night, April 1, of a third party gaining illegal access to the names, billing account information including balances due, address, and phone numbers of certain customers. No customer banking information, account passwords, social security numbers or credit card information was accessed. Further, there has been no unauthorized access to customer accounts or the CNG and SNG computer networks. The companies are urging customers not to respond to unsolicited calls or emails seeking payment or disclosure of additional personal or financial information.
One of the best ways to beat scammers is to take a moment to scrutinize email messages while keeping the following in mind:
- Hover over links to verify the URL
- Do not download attachments
- Go directly to the source if you have a question about your SCG or CNG bill
CNG and SCG have proactively funded approximately $5 million in our cybersecurity defense efforts this year to detect breaches and secure key systems.
CNG and SCG security teams moved swiftly and have launched a full and thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and have notified local authorities. Customers are urged to also contact our Customer Care lines – CNG Greenwich at 203-869-6900, CNG Hartford at 860-524-8361, and SCG at 800-659-8299 – for additional information.
